Problems like yours are wiring related Another test you can do is to load test those power and ground wires. With the OEM connector disconnected at the ECM, jump power one at a time from pin 4 and 6, through a headlight bulb, then ground the headlight to make it come it on.

If the wires are in good shape, that headlight will be nice and bright. If the wiring is weak with a bad spot, the headlight will be dim. Your volt meter cannot load test the wire, so a bad connection will still show full battery voltage.

That bad connection cannot support an electrical load, that is why you get weird ECM problems like this. While the head light is connected wiggle your wiring harness all the way back to the either the batteries or the starter depending on where it gets its power from.

If the wiring has a bad spot, the headlight will flicker or drop out. Repeat this for the ground too but reversed. For sure, any corrosion needs to be cleaned up or replace those pins.

Also, it is best to have the proper test pins, that way you can see if any pins inside the connector body are spread and making poor contact. I would also try a test ECM for a few days if you can before spending any money on a new one. UPDATE: So, unfortunately heavyd was right… I have a break in a wire somewhere between the fuse box and ecm on the constant power side.

The pump is new and I have had the valve cover off all morning looking for leaks. Should it be spraying or barely seeping or would it matter. The gauges we tried are crapp so I will try to round up a new gauge. With the budget crisis going on they want let us spend any money right now.

A LOT of these engines failed and were replaced under warranty, I even read an account of an account where CAT replaced both engines in a boat twice. People whose experience with this engine is limited to Heavy Duty use Truckers also think they are under-powered and trash.

Hint, if someone thinks something is under-powered it probably also means they were running it very very hard in an attempt to get enough power for the job. Instead they are machined in the block. In a wet sleeve engine, with the engine still in a vehicle you can press the cylinders sleeves out of the block and press new ones in to replace a worn out cylinder.

This means that when the engine is worn out, if you want to rebuild it, you pretty much HAVE to remove it from the vehicle. It just means that when you get to k or k miles expect a large bill to rebuild the engine.

Again, not good for a trucker. This is a very very minor issue. And the computer would control the high pressure oil which then controlled the injectors. This allowed CAT to do some really cool stuff, like make the engine run much quiter, better cold starts, more power, better fuel economy and that is really true, not just a marketing thingbetter emissions and possibly more. Again, not a huge deal, like any engine take care of it and it will take care of you. CAT brand filters are some of the best of the best and they are cheap for the quality.
